The alignment tool is needed for the Mercury II optical encoder installation for the following reasons:
1. If you have limits on your scale.
2. If you want the index of the scale to be the width of 1 LSB rather than 20 microns.
3. To activate the gain, offset, and phase compensation which affects the subdivisional error.
